Tasks and Summary

Site Clearance

On Monday 5 September, we were tasked with site clearance and clean-up, which involved removing broken bricks, rubble, and any other material that would no longer be used. Additionally, it required us to clean-up the site we were going to be doing the setting out on.

Penetration Test

As soon as we were done setting out we carried out the penetration test on 4 different parts of our site. This involved us being introduced to the penetrometer which the team took a particular interest in. This task was not so laborious as the team took it in turns to perform the tests.

Surface Screed Removal

Using the jackhammer was quite a laborious task. The machine would sometimes skip on the surface especially when you were just starting out. A demonstration of how to use the equipment would be necessary in order to maintain safety for the students who are performing the community build using this equipment. However, once everyone got accustomed to using the jackhammer we alternated for us to progress faster and finish the task as soon as possible. We still had to clear the area and sweep it clean alongside removing the rubble and broken screed. The room we had to remove the surface screed from was on the first floor of the building so it was quite difficult to get it down to the bottom floor, especially with the narrow staircase.

Setting Out and Penetration Tests

We began setting out on Monday after the lunch break, however, we were not able to finish it due to other groups using the same equipment we had to use. This task involved us marking out exactly where the building strip footing will be located for the front-end loader/digger to dig.

Scaffolding Set-Up

Setting up the scaffolding was a bit difficult at first because of the lack of knowledge about it as a group. However, Mikael had prior experience in working with scaffolding which delighted the group and gave us an opportunity to learn from him. The scaffolding was particularly heavy to carry to the site we were going to work at. Once this was done we then progressed well as a team and got the scaffolding set up. When we were done with setting up the scaffolding we had to clean up the area around our scaffolding along with performing daily checks in order to meet the safety requirements.
